Introduction:
Orthopaedics Surgery is a Branch of Science that deals with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumours, and congenital disorders. The Department of orthopaedics was established in May 2006 at the Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences. Since then, the department has been rendering adequate and commendable services to all kinds of orthopaedic patients. Presently, there are 3 units with 3 consultants in each unit. Academic activities in the form of seminars / Case Presentations / Journal Clubs / X-ray Discussions are held daily, from 8 - 9 a.m. (Monday to Saturday). All postgraduates and interns, plus all teaching staff members, participate actively. The department organizes regular conferences, symposia, and seminars at national and state levels. Also, extension and extra-mural lectures are organized regularly. There has been sub-specialization such as hand surgery, and shoulder and elbow surgery.
Infrastructure:
- Orthopaedics OPD- Currently the department of orthopaedics runs daily three OPD simultaneously. OPD rooms attached with state of art physiotherapy centre for proper rehabilitation of follow-up cases and management of new opd cases too. OPD also has well-equipped Plaster room facilities and a dressing facility. A dedicated CTEV correction facility with free braces is provided in the OPD every Thursday.
- Orthopaedics Operation theatre- Department of orthopaedics has state of arm Modular operation theatre with all the latest equipment needed for performing surgical procedures. Modular operation theatre equipped with an Image intensifier, fracture table with all attachments needed for upper limb/lower limb/spine, and arthroscopy surgeries. Operation theatres also have Knee arthroscopy, shoulder arthroscopy, and spine endoscope for performing minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures.
- Trauma Centre- The emergency unit at UPUMS saifai is located in a dedicated 350 bedded state-of-the-art trauma centre. That is very convenient and has swift access in case of an emergency. 24/7 Trauma Centre is a one-stop Accident Facility Centre, equipped to handle a range of medical crises, from minor to critical emergencies, and resuscitations in complex road traffic accidents. All emergencies are managed in a 30 bedded emergency care unit, looked after by an experienced team of doctors. Dedicated elevators ensure quick transfer of patients to operating rooms, ICUs and wards. Round-the-clock ambulance services at this institute provide 24/7 coverage for trauma patients and have the best critical life-saving equipment on board. Our trauma centre has a catchment area of five districts including Etawah, Manipuri, Firozabad, Auraiya, and Agra. Our trauma centre is located almost in the mid of Agra and Lucknow of Agra Lucknow expressway and is very well connected with the earliest reachability from the expressway in case of any emergencies.

- Quick and safe transportation to the hospital.
- Providing Prompt Medical attention within Golden Hour.
- Stabilizing the Patients with a multidisciplinary approach.
- To provide the earliest definitive management.
- Earliest rehabilitation.
- Orthopaedics Wards- The Department of orthopaedics has 120 beds for all indoor cases. all Orthopaedic pads are centrally air-conditioned and equipped with a Central oxygen supply and Central vacuum suction. A single word has 30 beds with a centrally situated nursing station for proper monitoring of the patients. Department also have 30 bedded post-operative ward equipped with multi para monitors and dedicated trained nursing staff. Private rooms are also available in the Trauma centre for patients if needed. The air-conditioned general ward is free of cost for all patients which also includes any drugs needed for them. Three time well balanced full meal also provided to every patient free of cost every day.

- Academic Infrastructure- The Department of orthopaedics has a seminar room, and demonstration room with audiovisual facilities for Undergraduate, postgraduate and paramedical education and training. Department also has an orthopaedics museum for demonstrations of bone and bone models. A hands-on workshop is also available for training medical students. Simulators are available for surgical practice and procedure skill developments for postgraduate medical students like the Arthroscopy simulator. Facility for live surgical demonstration of surgical procedure also available from orthopaedics OT to outside OT for medical students.

- Routine OPD- Department of Orthopaedics is running daily three OPD rooms for consultations for orthopaedic cases. OPD services include prescriptions, Plaster applications, CTEV corrective cast application, and minor surgical procedures including joint aspirations and intraarticular injections.

- Emergency Services- 24 hours emergency services are provided by the department of orthopaedics at Trauma Centre Emergency with state of art facilities. Dedicated trauma management units are available in the emergency that includes specialized doctors from different departments for a multidisciplinary approach to a case of any trauma.
- Indoor Services- Cases admitted through OPD and emergency are admitted to indoor wards and prepared for surgical intervention if needed. Following surgical facilities are provided by the department of orthopaedics.

- Academic Services-
- Undergraduate Training (MBBS)- The total intake of MBBS students at UPUMS Saifai is 200 students. The Department of orthopaedics is actively involved in Undergraduate skill-based teaching that includes Morning lectures, demonstrations, and Seminars during Clinical postings.
- Postgraduate Training (MS Orthopaedics)- The postgraduate course in orthopaedics started in 2013 with two MS seats, currently, a total of 6 MS orthopaedics seats are allotted to UPUMS Saifai and all 6 seats are recognized from MCI Delhi. Department postgraduate teaching and training involves daily ward rounds teaching, seminars, case presentations, journal club meetings, death review meetings, skilled lab sessions, and x-ray discussions. Postgraduates are also posted in other departments as per MCI guidelines. Postgraduates have to maintain a log book and have to make daily entries about work done by them and get them checked by the Unit In-charge on regular bases.
